A stick cracked, and Gavran jerked upright. His neck had the telltale ache of sleeping in an awkward position. When had he fallen asleep?

Around him, the world had the muted colors of early dawn, a line of pale pink along the horizon indicating that it wouldn’t be long before the sun came up.

He straightened, reaching out for Ceana. Had they missed the banshee by falling asleep?

His hands found only empty space where Ceana had been wedged in beside him before he drifted off.

Grit ringed his eyes. He scrubbed it away. Ceana stood close to the stream, a tromped-down line of grass along the edge suggesting she’d been pacing back and forth for hours. She must have crept away after he’d drifted off. Of course she had. He was the one who tended to doze, leaving her to keep watch. That was how they’d gotten into this nightmare in the first place. The cursed wishes weren’t supposed to take effect until they both slept. Had he been able to stay awake when his turn came, perhaps they could have found a way to break the wishes without all the suffering.

Your family wouldn’t have Finnegan, then. The whisper in the back of his mind was subtle. The words could easily be his own thoughts. And your mamaidh would barely be able to walk on her damaged knees.

Both things Ceana had told him about his life before the wishes. Benefits he’d gained.

Benefits he wouldn’t have wanted to lose.

No smell accompanied the thoughts. Did that mean they were his own? Or was it only the emotions of others that brought a smell along with them?

He pressed his hands into his forehead, even though the thoughts refused to be physically pushed away. If those were his own thoughts, what did that say about him? Ceana had lived for a year, seeing the worst the world had to offer. Her mother had died. Her brother was lost.

And they’d also saved hundreds of people from the tyranny of the nuckalevee. That wouldn’t have happened, either.

“Gavran.” Ceana’s voice came out in a low hiss. She scurried toward him and motioned for him to get up. “I think someone’s coming.”
